Without a doubt, kiln-drying is the most important part of manufacturing a log home. The process of reducing the log's moisture content ensures a product that will last over time. Administered properly, kiln-drying not only removes excess moisture from the wood, it also eliminates fungi and mold, insect infestation, nd provides a good base for stains and finishes.
With 3 kilns in operation, logs are dried for a minimum of 30 days at a temperature of 180 degrees. This period of time ensures that the moisture has been reduced to 19% or less. This can result in as much as 10,000 gallons of water being removed from a log home.
Our goal is to provide our customer with the very best product available. We feel we cannot do this without the kiln-drying process.
Benefits of Kiln-Drying
- Kiln-drying stabilizes the wood.
- Kiln-drying before milling maintains the quality of the wood.
- Most checks occur during drying.
- Logs are turned in the milling process to maximize the best possible finish.
- Kiln-drying kills wood boaring insects and decay fungi (dead-standing and preseasonal logs harbor both of these).
- Kiln-drying sets the pitch and prevents pitch bleed.
- Kiln-dried logs are lighter and thereby save transportation costs.
